Lexington has some of the best healthcare in Kentucky. UK HealthCare, Baptist Health Lexington, and CommonSpirit Saint Joseph are all within a few miles of each other. That's great for your care, and it's also why the Medicare plan you pick matters so much here. A plan that limits you to one network can cut you off from specialists you'd otherwise drive 10 minutes to see.
Kentucky Medicare Help works with Lexington residents to compare Medicare Supplement, Medicare Advantage, and Part D plans from every major carrier in Fayette County. We're licensed Kentucky agents, a service of MedMyWay, and our help is free. Most Lexington clients never visit an office: we do plan reviews by phone or video, on your schedule.
Fayette County has about 55,000 Medicare beneficiaries, and roughly 46% of them stay on Original Medicare instead of switching to Medicare Advantage. That's a higher share than most of Kentucky, and the reason is local: Lexington has a lot of top-tier care, and Original Medicare plus a Medigap plan lets you use any of it.
With a Medigap plan, there's no network. Any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare accepts your plan, whether that's:
No referrals, no prior authorizations for covered services, and no surprise bill because a specialist turned out to be out-of-network. It also works out of state. If you spend winters in Florida or visit grandkids in another state, Medigap goes with you.
Two plans cover the large majority of new Medigap enrollees in Kentucky.
Plan G covers everything Original Medicare doesn't, except the annual Part B deductible ($283 in 2026). Once you've paid that, you pay $0 for Medicare-covered care for the rest of the year. It's the most popular choice for people turning 65 because the costs are predictable.
Plan N costs less each month. In exchange, you pay up to $20 for some office visits and up to $50 for an ER visit that doesn't lead to an admission. For healthy retirees who see the doctor a few times a year, Plan N often comes out cheaper overall.
Sample monthly Plan G premiums in Kentucky (2026):
Plan N premiums start around $91/month with the lowest-priced carriers.
The coverage is identical from one company to the next. Plan G from one carrier pays exactly the same claims as Plan G from another. Price is the only difference, and as the table shows, that difference can be hundreds of dollars a month. That's why comparing carriers matters more than anything else in a Medigap decision.
Kentucky gives Medigap policyholders protections that most states don't, and they make it easier to fix a bad rate.
The Kentucky birthday rule. Every year, for 60 days after your birthday, you can switch to another company's version of the same Medigap plan (Plan G to Plan G, for example) with no health questions. If your carrier raises your premium, you aren't stuck with it. We can shop your plan every year around your birthday and move you if there's a better rate.
Guaranteed coverage under 65. Under House Bill 345 (KRS 304.14-525, effective January 2024), if you're on Medicare before 65 because of a disability or ESRD, every Kentucky Medigap insurer must offer you all of its plans with no medical underwriting. Your premium is capped at the weighted average of its rates for people 65 and older. Many states leave under-65 beneficiaries with few or no Medigap options, so this is a big deal.
Your first six months still matter most. Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period starts the month you're 65 and enrolled in Part B. During those six months, any carrier and any plan letter must accept you without health questions. The birthday rule only lets you switch within the same plan letter, so pick the right letter at 65.
Medigap isn't right for everyone. About 54% of Fayette County beneficiaries choose Medicare Advantage, and for many people it's the better fit.
Fayette County has about 40 Medicare Advantage plans for 2026 (not counting special needs plans), and 29 of them have a $0 monthly premium. Most include drug coverage, and many add dental, vision, and hearing benefits. The tradeoffs are provider networks, prior authorizations, and copays that add up during a heavy-use year, with yearly out-of-pocket maximums ranging from $3,350 to $9,250 depending on the plan.
The big local carriers are Humana, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, and Wellcare. Before you enroll in any MA plan, confirm that your specific UK, Baptist, Saint Joseph, or Lexington Clinic doctors are in its network. We check that for you as part of every review.
If you're one of the 7,000+ Fayette County residents who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid, a Dual Special Needs Plan (D-SNP) may give you more benefits than either program alone. We can walk you through those options too.
We help clients throughout Lexington, including Chevy Chase, Ashland Park, Hamburg, Masterson Station, Beaumont, Tates Creek, and Downtown, plus the surrounding Bluegrass counties:
1) Book a time. Choose a phone or video appointment that works for you.
2) Share your list. Tell us your doctors, prescriptions, and what you're paying now.
3) See your options side by side. We compare carriers and plans and explain the tradeoffs in plain English.
4) Decide with no pressure. If you want to switch, we handle the application. If your current plan is the best fit, we'll tell you that too.
If your Medicare Supplement premium has increased, don't assume you have no options. We'll help you compare current premiums, available discounts, company rate history, underwriting requirements, and long-term value.
